April Lawn Care, What Your Lawn Needs Right Now

April Lawn Care, What Your Lawn Needs Right Now

April in Adelaide always feels like a bit of a mixed bag, and this year is no different. We came off the back of that huge burst of rain at the end of February, the kind that soaks everything through and gives your lawn a real boost. Since then, it has been pretty dry again, which can easily throw off your usual lawn care routine if you are not paying attention.

Right now, your lawn is sitting in that in between stage. Nights are noticeably cooler, which slows growth down, but the days are still bringing enough warmth to keep things ticking along. That means your lawn is still active, just not bouncing back as quickly as it would in peak summer, so a more balanced approach is key.

If you have recently laid instant lawn, or you are planning to, this is a really good window to do it. The soil is still warm enough to encourage root development, without the stress that comes with extreme heat. You do not need to make big changes, just a few smart adjustments to keep everything on track.

Adjust your watering, don't switch it off

After that heavy rainfall in late February, it is easy to assume your lawn is still holding plenty of moisture. In reality, most Adelaide soils dry out much faster than expected, especially with the dry spell we have had since. What looked well hydrated a few weeks ago can now be lacking moisture below the surface.

You do not need to water as frequently as you did through summer, but stopping altogether will put your lawn under stress. A deep soak once or twice a week is usually enough, depending on your soil type. This helps drive roots deeper and keeps your lawn more resilient as conditions continue to shift.

Keep an eye on early signs of stress rather than waiting until the lawn looks tired. A dull colour, visible footprints, or slight curling in the blades are all signs it needs water. Staying ahead of these signs will help maintain a healthy and consistent lawn.

Keep mowing, just ease back slightly

Your lawn is still growing, but not at the same pace as it was during the warmer months. That means you can ease back on how often you mow, but it is still important to keep things regular. Letting the lawn grow too long can lead to uneven coverage and reduce overall lawn quality.

Lifting your mower height slightly is a simple change that makes a noticeable difference. A bit of extra length helps your lawn retain moisture and cope better with those warmer daytime temperatures that are still sticking around.

It is also a good time to check your mower blades. Sharp blades give a cleaner cut, which reduces stress on the grass and helps it recover more efficiently. This becomes more important as growth slows and the lawn takes longer to repair itself.

Feed your lawn for steady growth

April is one of the best times to apply a balanced fertiliser. Your lawn is still active enough to absorb nutrients, but you will not get the rapid growth that comes with summer feeding. This makes it easier to maintain a neat and consistent lawn.

A fertiliser that supports both root and leaf development will give you the best results. Stronger roots now will help your lawn handle the cooler months and set it up for a quicker recovery when spring arrives. If your lawn struggled during the dry stretch after that February rain, a light application of fertiliser can help bring it back. It encourages thicker growth and improves colour without pushing the lawn too hard.

Watch for weeds as conditions shift

The combination of heavy rain followed by dry conditions creates the perfect environment for weeds to start appearing. Autumn is when many broadleaf weeds begin to establish, so it is worth staying on top of them early.

Dealing with weeds while they are small is always easier than letting them spread. Spot treatment or manual removal can go a long way in keeping your lawn clean and healthy. A thick and well maintained lawn is your best defence. When your grass is growing evenly and has good coverage, it leaves less space for weeds to take hold and compete.

Aeration and soil health still matter

The shift from a very wet period into dry conditions can lead to soil compaction without it being obvious. Compacted soil makes it harder for water and nutrients to reach the root zone, even if you are watering regularly.

If your lawn feels firm underfoot or water seems to sit on the surface rather than soaking in, it may be time to look at aeration. Even a basic approach can help improve airflow and allow moisture to penetrate properly.

Adding a soil conditioner or wetting agent can also help improve how your soil holds and distributes water. This is particularly useful after a dry spell, helping your lawn make better use of every watering.

A good time to plan ahead

April is often overlooked, but it is one of the best times to set your lawn up for long term success. The conditions are more forgiving, and your lawn has time to establish before winter slows everything down.

Whether you are maintaining an existing lawn or planning for instant lawn in Adelaide, consistency is what matters most. Regular mowing, proper watering, and timely feeding will keep your lawn in great shape.

That burst of rain at the end of February gave lawns a strong boost, but the dry conditions since have levelled things out again. With cooler nights and warm days still in play, steady and thoughtful care now will make all the difference heading into winter.

Take the guesswork out of it

If you want a lawn that looks great year round without the trial and error, combining professional installation with a proper lawn care program is the way to go. At Instant Lawn Adelaide, we can supply and install high quality instant lawn, then support it with a tailored care program designed for local conditions. That means your lawn is set up properly from day one and continues to perform as the seasons change.

Whether you are starting fresh or improving what you already have, having the right plan in place makes all the difference. From choosing the right turf to ongoing fertilising and maintenance, everything is handled with Adelaide's climate in mind. If you are ready for a lawn that stays healthy, consistent, and easy to manage, now is a great time to get started.

March is a great time to apply Pre-emergent herbicides like Spartan & Barricade to prevent the germination of seasonal, cool season growing weeds like Winter Grass "Poa Annua", Clovers, Bindii & Rye Grasses. Sadly it will not prevent the likes of SourSobs as these are bulbs, Creeping Oxalis (same family as Soursobs) & require a post emergent herbicide (we can make a separate appointment to tackle these) but all seeded weeds will be treated.

We include Pre-emergent herbicides within our regular 12 weekly Lawn Care Program along with Seasonal fertilser, Soil wetter & Lawn Grub & Beetle prevention & eradication application.

Contact us now as it isn't too late to apply this treatment to stop those pesky weeds from taking hold.
