Over the winter months

The cold has certainly stuck around, yes we know it’s winter but brrrrr. We have had some sunny days which have been great and the days are slowly getting longer but we are still in the middle of winter and your lawn will still be in dormancy.

If you didn’t get a chance to fertilise in autumn, we recommend not fertilising just yet. When your lawn is dormant due to the cold it doesn’t have the ability to benefit from any fertiliser added. Colourguard Plus is able to be used though and it will help give your lawn a bit of green and protect it from frosts.

Before watering at the moment, check and see if it really needs it first. You can do this by checking to see how dry the soil is. If you do need to water, try doing this first thing in the morning to try and minimise any fungal growth.

If you are still needing to mow, think about adjusting the blades on your mower a bit higher to so as not to damage the grass blades too much. Cutting too short at this time of year can leave your lawn susceptible to disease. If you’re not using your mower much, now is a great time to get it serviced and sharpen the blades ready for spring. It’s also a good idea to remove lawn clippings and any leaves to ensure your lawn gets maximum sunlight as well.

Over the winter months while the lawn goes dormant, unfortunately the weeds don’t. You will need to keep an eye on this and keep on top of them. Hand weeding is one option or you can apply a selective herbicide.

In fact, it can actually be easier! For one, you will use much less water during the establishment period and as the turf will be dormant, you won’t have to spend much time mowing it until spring.
