Lawn Care in Adelaide for November: How to Handle the Crazy Weather
Spring in Adelaide has been a wild ride this year. From warm, sunny days to cold snaps, gusty winds and heavy rain, it’s been a bit of everything. For homeowners trying to keep their lawns in good shape, this unpredictable weather has made lawn care more challenging than usual. But as we move into November, there are still plenty of things you can do to give your lawn the best chance of thriving as summer approaches.
Inconsistent weather can take a toll on even the healthiest lawn. Fluctuations in temperature, moisture levels and sunlight all affect how your grass grows. That’s why this time of year is less about sticking to a strict routine and more about responding to what your lawn actually needs. Flexibility and observation are key as we navigate the tail end of spring and prepare for hotter days ahead.
Keep an eye on watering
November often brings longer, sunnier days, but with the recent mix of cold fronts and storms, your lawn may have had more than enough moisture at times. It's important not to overwater, especially after heavy rainfall. Too much water can lead to shallow roots, fungal problems and weak growth.
On the flip side, if we get a sudden burst of heat or a dry spell, your lawn may quickly start to show signs of stress. A good rule of thumb is to water deeply but less frequently. Aim to water early in the morning so the soil can absorb it before the sun gets too strong. This also gives your lawn time to dry out during the day, which helps prevent disease.
Mowing with care
With all the weather variation, growth can be a bit stop-start, so it’s important to adjust your mowing habits. If you mow too short after a period of slower growth, you risk scalping the lawn and stressing the roots. Instead, aim to trim only the top third of the grass blade each time you mow.
Regular mowing encourages thicker, healthier grass, but it’s better to mow a bit less often if the growth has been slow. Sharpen your mower blades too, especially after mowing damp or fast-growing grass, to keep the cut clean and reduce the risk of disease.
Watch for weeds and pests
November’s warmer days combined with extra rain create ideal conditions for weeds to take hold. Keep an eye out for common intruders like bindii, clover and broadleaf weeds. Spot treating early before they spread will save you a lot of effort later in summer.
Pests such as lawn beetles and armyworms may also begin to emerge as the weather warms up. If you notice patches of lawn that look like they’ve been eaten away or turning brown despite watering, it might be time to check under the surface. Catching pest problems early means you can treat them quickly and minimise damage.
Fertilise with care
After a stormy, cooler October, your lawn could probably use a nutritional boost. November is a great time to apply a slow-release fertiliser to help build strong roots and green up the lawn as summer nears. Choose a fertiliser suited to your lawn type and the current condition of the soil.
Fertilising before a period of rain can actually be beneficial, as the rainfall helps wash the nutrients into the soil and reach the roots effectively. Just make sure it’s not an extreme downpour that could cause runoff, and ensure the lawn is well-watered afterwards to help the fertiliser absorb properly.
Tackle patchy areas
If your lawn has bare or patchy spots from winter wear or recent storms, November is still a good time to repair them. You can top-dress with a thin layer of sandy loam and sow some lawn seed or lay new turf if needed. Just be sure to water gently and consistently until the new grass is established.
Choosing the same variety as your existing lawn will help it blend more easily, and make ongoing maintenance simpler. If you’re unsure what type of grass you have, take a photo and ask your local turf supplier or landscaper.
Prepare for summer
November is the bridge between spring and summer, so now’s the time to get your lawn ready for the heat. This includes adjusting your watering schedule, checking your irrigation system for leaks or inefficiencies, and possibly raising your mowing height slightly to provide more shade to the soil.
Aerating your lawn can also be beneficial if it’s become compacted over winter. It allows air, water and nutrients to reach the roots more effectively, which helps the grass cope better during dry, hot conditions. You can hire an aerator or use a garden fork for smaller areas.
Stay flexible with your lawn care
Perhaps the most important tip this month is to stay adaptable. Adelaide’s spring has been far from typical, so try not to follow a rigid schedule. Instead, respond to what your lawn is showing you. If it’s looking pale, droopy or thin, it might need more water or a feed. If it’s growing fast and thick, keep on top of mowing and check for pests or weeds hiding in the growth.
Lawn care in November isn’t about perfection, it’s about giving your lawn the support it needs to handle whatever the weather throws at it. With a little attention and flexibility, you’ll be well on your way to a greener, stronger lawn ready to face the summer heat.
