Spring is Here!

Spring’s here, and isn’t that a breath of fresh air? With the promise of sunnier days, most of us can’t wait for those balmy afternoons to roll in. While we’ve had a hint of warmth, there’s still a nip in the air. So if you’re behind on your spring lawn care, no worries, there’s still time.

It’s not uncommon for lawns to seem a bit tired and worn out as spring starts. Before your lawn gets its groove back with new growth, there are a few things you can do to help it along. Fancy giving your lawn a fresh start? Grab a rake and gently remove the thatch – that’s the dead or brown grass that’s built up. Once you’ve tidied up, mow the grass and treat it with a slow-release fertiliser.

A heads-up for our Adelaide folks, give your lawn a little more time before diving into heavy de-thatching or full lawn renovations. It’s best to wait until the soil’s had a chance to warm up and the grass starts growing more actively.
Once you’ve spread the fertiliser, it needs a good watering. But remember, after the kind of winter we’ve had, the soil might still be quite moist. Do a quick finger-test to check the moisture levels. Just poke your finger in the soil to see how wet it feels. Be mindful not to drown your lawn, especially when it’s still cool. But, given our unpredictable spring winds, keep an eye out to ensure the soil doesn’t dry out too much.

Noticed some patchy spots on your lawn? If you’ve been dealing with weeds during winter, now’s a good time to sprinkle some seed over those spots. It’ll help fill in the gaps, fortify your lawn against pesky weeds and diseases, and set your lawn up to thrive in summer. Got some bigger patches or areas that see a lot of foot traffic? A few other quick tips for your lawn care list:
• Give your mower a once-over to ensure it’s in working order.
• Think about using a pre-emergent.
• Got an irrigation system? Now’s the time to check it.
• Consider aerating your lawn to let it breathe.
