Spring has arrived!

Spring has arrived and we don’t know about you but we’re looking forward to some warmer days. While we have had a couple of warmer days the overall temperatures are still fairly cool so don’t stress if you haven’t started any of your Spring/Summer lawn prep yet.

Many lawns enter spring looking a bit worse for wear, especially if the new growth hasn’t yet kicked in. Now is a good time to consider giving your grass a bit of a going over with a rake to clear out any thatch (dead or brown grass), then applying a slow release fertiliser after a mow. Vigorous de-thatching or a full lawn renovation for Adelaide lawns should be left for a bit just yet until the soil has had a chance to warm up and the grass has actively entered it’s growing phase.

Your fertiliser will need to be watered in once applied but with the winter we have had here, make sure you check the moisture in the soil by sticking your finger in and seeing how damp it actually is. You don’t want to over water while the temperatures are still cool. Those blustery spring winds we get here can dry things out quickly though so it always pays to check.

If your lawn is looking a bit patchy, especially if you’ve treated for weeds over the winter, now can be a good time to over sow with seed. This will help to thicken any bare patches, strengthen your lawn to help stop weed growth and disease and get your lawn into great shape for summer. For bigger bare patches or high traffic areas, we can easily install new turf for you to get your lawn looking it’s best.

Other things you can look at are checking your lawn mower, applying pre-emergent, checking your irrigation system if you have one and aerating your lawn.
